Aleppo Pepper, otherwise known as Capsicum annuum, is a medium-degree heat pepper with ratings of 2,500-5,000 SHU on the Scoville Heat Units scale. Pronounced "ah-LEH-poe", it's also called Aleppo chili flakes, Aleppo pepper flakes, or Aleppo chilli. This pepper originated in the New World and eventually made its way to the region encompassing Aleppo in northern Syria, where it has become an important part of the local culture and cuisine. Regrettably, the ongoing civil war in Syria has destroyed the pepper fields, with most Aleppo Pepper in commerce today grown in Turkey. Our jar contains Aleppo pepper flakes which are hand-harvested, imported, and grown from Aleppo pepper seeds in Turkey. Aleppo peppers carry a unique taste profile, combining sweet undertones with a cumin-like earthiness, lemony top notes, and gentle heat that builds slowly and then dissipates.
